Nickname sync
How CloudMod keeps a member's nickname the same on every server of your network — when it happens, what it leaves alone, and how to switch it on or off.
Nickname sync gives a member the same nickname on every server of your network. Change it in one place and CloudMod copies it to the others, so people stay recognisable wherever they are. It only touches nicknames — roles are handled by your Role Rules. It is off by default, and it needs a network: a single server has nothing to sync with.
Switch it on
- Open Project settings → Server setup → Network and turn on Sync nicknames.
- Give CloudMod the Manage Nicknames permission on every server of your network, and keep its role above your members' highest role (Discord only lets a bot rename people below it).
- Optional: a sub-server that should keep its own nicknames can opt out with its Nick-Sync switch on the Sub-Servers page.
Which way nicknames travel
The main server is the source of truth, but changes travel both ways:
- A nickname set on the main server goes to every sub-server.
- A nickname set on a sub-server goes to the main server, and from there to all other sub-servers.
- When a member joins a sub-server, they get their main-server nickname right away, together with their roles. A member who has no nickname on the main server brings nothing along, and joining the main server itself changes nothing.
- Removing a nickname travels too: the other servers go back to the member's Discord name.
- The periodic check compares nicknames as well, for members who hold at least one synced role on the main server. Whether it corrects or only reports depends on Auto-Fix — timing and details are in How the sync works.
What it leaves alone
- Bots. Each bot keeps its own name on each server. CloudMod's own nickname, avatar and banner come from Server profile, not from nickname sync.
- Server owners. Discord does not let any bot change an owner's nickname. CloudMod skips them automatically — on the main server too, so a nickname changed on a sub-server can't be copied to the main server's owner.
- Opted-out sub-servers. An opted-out server neither receives nor sends nicknames.
- Paused sub-servers. If your plan allows fewer servers than you have, a paused sub-server gets no nicknames until you unpause it or change the plan.
- Everything in Dry-run mode. CloudMod only logs what it would change. See Dry-Run vs Auto-Fix.
Sync one member by hand
Admins can sync a single member from the main server at any time:
/sync nick @member— the nickname only/sync user @member— roles and nickname
The reply tells you what was applied, what was already correct, and what Discord refused, such as a server owner's nickname.
When it doesn't work for someone
Almost always it's one of Discord's hard rules — an owner, a role order, or a missing permission. Nickname sync isn't working for some users walks through each one.
